Controlling weeds and insects in the Vineyard

In the movement toward methods of chemical free or organic vineyard practices, weed and insect control can be quite a challenge. Flame Engineering has been applying their unique approach for 53 years and to vineyards specifically for over 20 years. The Red Dragon GP-Series Vineyard and Orchard Flaming Equipment offers producers a wide variety of highly effective, economical and pesticide free options to meet their weed and pest control needs.

Flaming uses clean burning propane to deliver a quick blast of fire to specific areas on berms which kills weeds and their seeds, as well as harmful insects and spores. This process can be used as often as needed to keep the berm area clean and keep weeds under control, without damaging vines, trees, irrigation systems, vine protectors or the environment, all while eliminating chemical costs and keeping manual labor low. Depending on weed pressure and maturity, flaming is typically done 4 to 6 times per year initially, with customers reporting a reduction in need from season to season.

Advantages of row crop flaming

PictureLighting the torches on a row crop flamer
Planting season is right around the corner, and so is weed season.
Last year, wet weather gave us an abundance of logistical challenges like when to plant and how to get rid of the weeds.

Many farmers who favor mechanical cultivation were unable to combat weeds due to wet field conditions and many ended up on the short end of the stick at harvest time.
Flame weeding in row crops presents some advantages you may not have considered.
if you can drive a tractor into your fields you can control weeds with a row crop flamer.

By not cultivating you are not stirring up new weed seeds, thereby lessening the chance of more weed seeds germinating.

If you have relied on herbicides like Round Up to control weeds, and worried about rain wasting your time and money just after you've sprayed, you will be happy to know that flame weeding takes effect as you drive and if it rains just after you flamed, it's okay!

Row crop flaming effectively controls weeds between rows and in the crop row with very little effect on the crop plants.

We've had some requests from farmers who want to flame weed with our vegetable bed flamers or bed flaming kits, to see video footage of one in use. Here is a video of the 4-VBF (8 torch unit) in action. There are complete units available from 2 - 8 row widths (4 - 16 torches). Kits are available in these widths and we can also put together kits for larger areas.
See the Vegetable Bed Flaming Manuals for more information on how they are set up. If you have any questions, please call or email.

Controlling ammonia during cold weather

11/11/2013

PictureLess run time on fans
During the colder months of the year, poultry growers are facing the challenge of heating their houses while running the fans enough to ventilate off excessive ammonia for better flock livability and reduced mortality.
It is during this time of year when we hear from our customers who are using the Red Dragon Poultry House Sanitizer that besides the darkling beetle and disease control, they have a lot less ammonia in their poultry houses after flame sanitizing and can run the fans less than they would otherwise. Not only are they saving on heat and electricity, they are using less ammonia treatment and seeing better feed conversion as well. Stay on top with a poultry house flame sanitizer.

Flame Weeding Soybeans

Picture
This field of organic soybeans was cultivated  just after flame weeding with a row crop flamer to kill the weeds that were growing in the crop row.
This was done during a drought and the grower had cultivated in anticipation of a coming rain, to encourage water penetration in the field, not because the flame application was not effective.
